As we inch closer to normality in Hawaii, I ‘m trying to pull myself out of the mental abyss I’ve placed myself in since last year. The pandemic, the election, the riots…they all took a toll on my mental health. But things are turning around. Jobs are coming back and I’m feeling like its all coming together again. So I’m now getting around to writing about some of the projects I’ve worked on in the last few months.
Work was non-existent last year. I had a handful of jobs and barely scrapped by but luckily I had one great job that at least made 2020 worth getting through.
I shot an in-store advertisement for Uniqlo Hawaii in the late fall. I was hired to shoot their LifeWear line of clothing. The images were turned into huge panels and displayed on the first floor of their Hawaii flagship store in Ala Moana Center. I had worked with the art buyer a few years ago and she liked how we worked together and knew I would be the right fit for this job.
We rented the North Shore home of a friend and shot four setups with natural light in a very quick time frame. Uniqlo Hawaii followed very strict COVID guidelines and we were able to make some very nice images.
I shot with a medium format Fuji camera that produced immense files as Uniqlo printed huge murals for their in-store advertising.
We used large bounce cards to fill in the shadows. Even at high noon we controlled the light enough to make the images soft and stay within Uniqlo’s vision.
My agents at Wonderful Machine produced a blog with my images. Please take a look.
