As Covid-19 restrictions continue on Oahu, a private water polo group, Lokahi Water Polo Club, has moved its practices from a closed, city owned pool to Ala Moana Beach Park. The reef protected calm waters are perfect for passing a ball around and shooting at a blow up, competitive size goal floating just a few meters off shore. Practice is held near sunset several days a week.
I began playing water polo again a few years ago with a club that coached a local high school. A few masters players would show up at the bi weekly practice held at a local pool.
Corona shut down all of that last year pushing the dedicated to continue playing in the ocean.
Our beach group is not nearly the numbers it used to be as only a handful of players show up. As there are many younger players who are better conditioned to play ahead of me, I began to bring my camera to document the group when I can’t get playing time in the goal.
As the pools continue to keep us away, the beach serves as a good alternative. I will bring my camera more often to capture this special group and the dedication of all to this alternative sport.
